The Criterion Project is a proposed, carefully planned wind energy facility that will benefit the region’s economy and environment. The project will help the region meet expected future power demands with a safe, clean, renewable, reliable, domestic source of power. Once fully operational, the Criterion project will provide electricity equivalent to the average annual use of about 23,000 households in the Mid-Atlantic region. Originally proposed as a 67-turbine, 100 MW project, Clipper recently resubmitted its proposal as a 70 MW wind energy project which will utilize 28 of Clipper’s Liberty 2.5 MW series turbines, the highest capacity wind turbines manufactured in the United States.
The Criterion project has undergone extensive public review including a number of studies since it was first proposed in 2002. In March 2003, Clipper was granted permission to build the project by the Public Service Commission after completing a variety of studies and a public hearing and comment process. Litigation has been a primary barrier to construction to this point. More details are provided in the Document Center link on this page, including a Fact Sheet that provides a project overview, list of project benefits, and Questions and Answers relating to the proposed Criterion Project.
We appreciate the support we continue to receive for the project from the local community. We have been pleased to offer information about the proposed Criterion Project via this public website for over four years now, and we look forward to continuing to share additional information about our project. Check back periodically for project updates and other news.
